The rephotographic project based on Sudek’s book Praha Panoramatická began in 1992 with the re-publication of his original volume of photographs from 1950s Prague. When seeing the book on a visit to Prague that year, I was intrigued because of my own established practice of panoramic black and white images. Discovering the locations of Sudek’s views, book-in-hand ensued over the next few weeks. This was my first rephotographic adventure, followed by extensive work in Florence and later in Paris. During subsequent visits to Prague I once again photographed a number of Sudek’s sites, finding architectural alterations in some places and the signs of commercial developments in the post-communist era. My affinity for the meanings to be found in architectural and cultural history have led to quite varied projects, many of them in panoramic format. The Sudek and Atget series have appeared in Prague at the French Cultural Institute.
A further series, created as a handmade book edition, documented sites in Prague that were significant in my father’s youth. My Father’s Prague, contains panoramic photographs, my father’s anecdotes and historical photographs from his collections.
During that visit in 2006, I also rephotographed sites for a small touristic photo-set from 1930s Prague given to me years before by my grandfather: Praha Pohlednice.
